Why Sourdough?
I like using sourdough to make any of my bread goods whenever possible. Sourdough can help with digesting the grains, especially with people who have gluten sensitivity.

Making and keeping a sourdough starter at home is easy if you have never done it before I have this straightforward No Fuss Sourdough Stater method. What I love about sourdough is that if you are the first one in your family to do it you are starting something that can be passed down for generations.
Ingredients for Sourdough Pizza Dough
- 1 cup active sourdough starter
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of warm water
- 4 tbsp of olive oil or about 1/4 cup
- 1 tsp salt
Tools
None of these tools are necessary, however, they are a big help. I made pizza dough and baked bread with just a bowl for years before buying a mixer.
- Stand Mixer (I love my Kitchen Aid Pro Series, you can find it here.)
- Large Bowl
- Dry measuring cups
- Liquid measuring cups
- Rolling Pin
- Pizza Stone or Pizza Pans
How to Make Sourdough Pizza

Start the night before with 1 cup of active or bubbly sourdough starter. I like adding all ingredients to the mixer making this a quick recipe easy to clean up.

Next, I measure out the olive oil and water. I use warm water to help the yeast long. I then add all the ingredients to the mixer. Once the ingredients are in I use the dough hook to knead the dough on setting 2.

Mix until the dough is smooth and elastic. Then I shape the dough into a ball and put it in an oiled bowl to double overnight.

The next morning (or whenever I get to it) I punch the dough down and divide it into two.

Next, I cover it and let it rest for a couple of hours or until it doubles in size.
Roll it out
Once the dough has risen, I roll it out into a thin circle about the size of the pizza pans I’m using. I prefer a pizza stone because I am not a big fan of non-stick cookware but sadly mine broke.

Bake
Preheat oven to 400F brush olive oil on the dough and then bake for about 6 minutes.

Baking the pizza dough before adding the toppings prevents a soggy pizza. I then add my favorite Homemade Marinara Sauce and shredded mozzarella cheese.

Toppings
You can add whatever toppings you like this time around I kept it simple and just did two cheese pizzas. Sourdough pizza is just like regular pizza except it has this extra flavor that blends so well even with just plain cheese.

Once you add your toppings bake the pizza for another 6 to 8 minutes depending on how you like your toppings and bread. Sometimes baking time also depends on the toppings. If you are doing an everything pizza I recommend lowering the temperature to 375F and cooking a little longer.

As you can see some in my family like a crispier more browned crust and others prefer a doughier pizza. Either way, this dough will work.

Easy Sourdough Pizza Dough
Learn how to make this super easy sourdough pizza dough. It is perfect for pizza, pizza rolls, and even calzones. It will replace takeout on your family's next pizza night.
Ingredients
- 1 cup active sourdough starter
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of warm water
- 4 tbsp of olive oil or about 1/4 cup
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- Start the night before by mixing the sourdough starter, water, oil, flour, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer.
- If your dough seems too runny add a bit of flour a little a the time. If the dough is too dry add a bit of water.
- Using the hook attachment knead the dough on speed 2 until it becomes smooth and elastic. This always takes longer than you think 15 to 20 minutes.
- If you are doing this by hand add all the ingredients to a bowl and once you have a dough going turn it over onto a floured surface and knead until smooth.
- Oil a large bowl form a ball with your dough and let it rise overnight in the bowl covered.
- The next morning or sometime the next day, the dough should have doubled. Take it out of the bowl and punch it down.
- Next, divide the dough into two equal pieces and form into balls. Cover and let them rest for about an hour or until they have doubled in size.
- Once they rise again roll them out into thin circles. They should be about 10 inches.
- Place them into your baking pan and preheat your oven to 400F
- Once the oven is preheated bake the pizza crust for about 6 minutes.
- Take out and add the sauce and toppings.
- Bake the pizza for an additional 6 to 8 minutes or into the cheese is melted.
- Allow to cool before serving to avoid the cheese falling off.
Notes
- To use a pizza stone just place the stone in to preheat with the oven. Once preheated take the stone out and sprinkle a bit of cornmeal on the stone before placing the rolled-out pizza crust on the hot stone place it back in the oven and pre-bake for 6 minutes.
- Prebaking the crust is important to prevent your crust from becoming soggy with the sauce and toppings.
- The second baking time after you add the toppings will vary depending on your toppings and the type of cheese you use. I recommend pre-cooking toppings like vegetables that release a lot of water. You may have to adjust the temperature to 375f and add time if you like to load your pizza up.
- Note on the cheese. I do not like to buy pre-shredded cheese because it doesn't melt the way block cheese does. It will work just know it will not melt so do not add too much time because your crust will burn.
