Here’s a must-try hot sandwich roll recipe using everyday ingredients with no yeast or rise time. This easy ham and cheese sandwich roll will be ready for the oven just in time for lunch on a cold winter day.

There’s nothing quite like a warm, cheesy sandwich straight from the oven. And what could be better than rolling your favorite fillings into a fluffy, homemade bread? In this recipe, I will show you how to make a delicious hot ham and cheese sandwich roll using just a few simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. Let’s get started!

Ingredients
4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling out dough)
2 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp baking powder
1 1/2 – 2 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup cold butter (tip: put the butter in the freezer while mixing dry ingredients)
1 1/2 tsp salt
12 oz ham, sliced or diced (I used uncured ham cut into small bite-sized pieces.)
12 oz of shredded cheese of choice (I used sharp cheddar)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
Butter, Butter, Butter
Even though traditionally butter is cubed and cut into the dough using a pastry cutter or a fork it is so much easier to use a cheese grater and shred the butter into the dry mixture. This tip has streamlined so many recipes for me from homemade biscuits to scones!

Using the paddle attachment of a freestanding mixer, mix in the shredded butter into the dry ingredients the mixture should look grainy and have small pea-size pieces like pictured below.

Set the mixer on low and slowly add the buttermilk. This will ensure you use just what you need. I ended up rushing this time around and my dough was too wet. If that happens add more flour as needed.

Don’t have buttermilk? No problem, use this quick and easy buttermilk substitute.
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes until a firmer dough forms.

Divide the dough into two equal size balls.
Roll the dough out into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.

Assemble the Rolls
Layer the ham and cheese slices over the top of the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.

Starting at one end, roll the dough up tightly into a log shape.
Place the roll seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet and brush the top with melted butter.

Baking time!
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

Although you’ll want to eat it right away, let the sandwich roll cool for a few minutes before slicing it into rounds and serving.
